A big topic of conversation on Grinnell7123.com (you're all welcome to join, by the way) is how to maintain/sustain activism now that we're The Older Generation. I love it when a plan comes together. --[[User:Oconnor|Mike O'Connor]] 20:47, 29 May 2008 (UTC) | A big topic of conversation on Grinnell7123.com (you're all welcome to join, by the way) is how to maintain/sustain activism now that we're The Older Generation. [edit] August 2008
I switched out the GrinnellWiki beta links for a First-Years' suggested reading list as an idea towards a sort of rotating feature for the front page (i.e. Wikipedia's main page). If anybody wants, we can still have the page revert back to what it was immediately prior using the history tab.

I just cleaned up the "classmates" area
Uffdah... "Classmates" was a mess. Lots of stub pages where there's just a person's name, but no entry (I deleted those). Changed every page so it's last name first (so the alpha sort works now). Added a "Class of yyyy" category to every entry I could figure out a class-year for. So peepul, here are some thoughts;
- Don't just stick a person's name in the wiki -- write something about them
- Put the last name first, followed by a comma, followed by first name
- Note that the class-category isn't just the year, it's "Class of" and then the year. I figure we'll save the plain number year category for events that happen in a given year

I was just looking through Wikipedia coding, and it looks like the way to sort people by last name while keeping it so that their pages start with their first names is to put, say "Category:Grinnell College people|Adelman, Kenneth L." when categorizing them. I hope this helps!

Kewl! And way to go tidying up the mess I'd made of all those pages. Thanks Josh! --Mike O'Connor 12:27, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Two pages! A scandal!
There are two pages about the same thing: Alumni Awards and Grinnell Alumni Awards. Same text and everything. There was one word between them that was different, so I changed them to be exactly the same, hoping it would merge the two magically. No luck. Any ideas? --MaddieCargas 05:59, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Egad! One option is to delete one of the pages. Do you see that option along with the "edit", "history" and "move" tabs? I imagine that one of the pages got created (duplicated) in an attempt to move the other to a better title. "Move" would have worked better. I removed the "Grinnell Alumni Awards" version -- I decided on that one by looking at the history. Mitch created that one, then 4 minutes later created the "Alumni Awards" version so I assume that's the one he really wants. Hey Mitch, if you really like "Grinnell Alumni Awards" better, try the "move" function. It works great for renaming pages. --Mike O'Connor 12:26, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Kewl, Mikey. how do we access pages that are not on the front index and about which we do not have a clue they exist. I put up Jimi Hendrix. Nobody would think to go there without a lead....
Best, Mitch
There are lots of paths through a wiki. Two that come to mind are "search" and "categories". Learning about categories has been a blast, and it's clearly a really powerful way to organize the info on this wiki. --Mike O'Connor 12:29, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Voicebox
Hey you alumni types, have you seen the cool Voicebox page?? You remember all the conversations we've had about activism? This looks like the place for us. Question for folks who are still at Grinnell -- is there any kind of online component to Voicebox yet? If there is, a link on that page would be great. If there isn't, maybe this wiki could be used for that -- or, something like this online discussion thingy we've put up at Grinnell7123.com. There are a BUNCH of us oldsters who'd be interested in helping out with Voicebox... --Mike O'Connor 19:51, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
This would be wonderful. This was in fact part of the original student-side inspiration for the wiki, as Emily Stiever conceived of it as providing a historical record of student activism for current students to be able to refer back to that has been in demand for some time. Emily can speak to this better than I can, but once we come up with a way to organize it, it would be incredibly useful.--HarryKrejsa 20:18, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
