A bit more on The Mission

Grinnell College has been around since 1846. Many students have passed through Grinnell; about 20,000 alumni are alive today. We were all affected by our time at Grinnell. Some made campus history. Others became famous for their accomplishments later. This wiki will be both a utility for current students and a historical record for alums (and, indeed, a historical record for current students and organizations to learn from).

Being a wiki, this is a jointly-editable space where you can add whatever you think is interesting. (We hasten to add that it is completely independent of Grinnell College, which did not authorize or create it, and bears no responsibility for the contents--see GrinnellWiki:General disclaimer.) This project was created by an enterprising coalition of students and alums (see: Wikiheads), who discovered in late spring 2008 that they were simultaneously working on the same project. (That's the kind of thing that makes the wiki gods smile.)

The GrinnellWiki is maintained by a group of administrators comprised of students past and present.

Editing this Wiki

Grinnellians can edit! Grinnellians should edit. This is our website. Alumni, students and other Grinnellians can make it what we want. You will notice pretty quickly that the site does not include an article on every topic that is near and dear to your heart. This is because we have just started. The future belongs to you and we need your contributions.

The intent of this project is to create an Encyclopedia Grinnellica of anything and everything related to the Grinnell community now and then.

• Students, especially first years, may use it to catalog or research all those crazy acronyms that plague current Grinnell students.

• Alumni may use it to remember and record our history: fondly remembered buildings, concerts, campus life, athletics, notable students, inspiring professors, and social practices. All those people, things, and events that made and make Grinnell special and shaped your time there.

Above all, have fun...Grinnell fun!

Registration

Anyone can read the GrinnellWiki, but only the 20,000 Grinnellians can edit it (that is, write a new article or change one already there). In order to edit you need to register, go to "log in/register" in the upper right-hand corner of this page.

• Students, faculty, or staff: use your @grinnell.edu e-dress to register.

• Alumni: use your @alumni.grinnell.edu email address to register. If you don't already have an alumni e-mail address, simply send a request to alumni@grinnell.edu. It may take a few hours for a response...

Now: take a look and then jump into the fray. Write an article on a beloved professor. Write an article on a significant event. Talk about your campus job. Edit one of the current articles to make it complete, correct, and more intelligible. Contribute where you wish. You cannot break it!

Hints

If you're a newbie, check out Newbie for tips and templates. Pick one of these or any other page, "edit" the page (that is, click on the "edit" tab at the top while you're viewing it), and you will see the codes and structure. Copying the structure of other pages makes writing your own much easier. Make sure to use the "Show preview" option at the bottom of the page you're editing to see where you might have made a boo-boo that you can fix before saving. Write on!

Credo

• Write what you know. Correct what you know to be erroneous. Watch the recent changes (from the "Recent changes" button in the left navigation bar) to see what people are writing/making up.

• Organize what you write with categories and links to other pages (see: Newbie).

• Be bold. You may be inclined to say, "Gee, I don't know much about this. I sure hope somebody else writes this entry." Reject that inclination. Others will edit and improve what you write; the main thing is to start. The heroes of this wiki are its authors. The goats... lurkers who don't edit what is incomplete, wrong, and/or inept.
