The Joe Rosenfield '25 Center (JRC) is the Grinnell College campus and student center. Designed by César Pelli and completed in the fall of 2006, the JRC contains a centralized student cafeteria, the Spencer Grill, numerous classrooms and meeting spaces, the Voicebox, SGA and Student Publications offices, KDIC, mail services, as well as the department of Student Affairs.

Additionally, the JRC is home to JRC 101, a large and well-equipped multipurpose room (featuring an LCD projector the size of a Mini Cooper) designed to serve as a prime venue for convocation, guest speakers, fairs, and large meetings or rallies.

Building Features

The Marketplace

The Marketplace is the only dining hall on campus, having replaced Quad and Cowles in the fall of 2006. While the food is generally praiseworthy, students have criticized this consolidation by saying that it creates huge lines during the busier parts of the day. The Marketplace contains many different stations offering different kinds of food, including grilled foods (at the Honor G Grill), pasta, stir fry, sandwiches, a salad bar, and vegan options. In the morning, the pasta bar is converted into a highly praised eggs-to-order station. In particular, the pork vindaloo is quite good. The Cheery Checkers who swipe P-cards upon entry are a recurring topic of discussion for many students.

Classrooms

JRC classrooms are especially well-equipped relative to others around campus. With almost every room featuring an LCD projector and multimedia podiums, each can be easily converted to accommodate presentations, meetings, films, or video game tournaments.

Spencer Grill

The Spencer Grill: Overpriced, but convenient. Good coffee.

Formerly named (and derided as) "the Grille," the Spencer Grill provides snacks, sandwiches, and (most importantly) coffee to students. The Grill's ludicrous prices are the subject of much discussion around campus, particularly in The S&B.

Fireplace Lounge

With an aesthetic resembling what The S&B called a "midwestern ski lodge," the JRC's fireplace lounge is a popular location for quiet studying, lounging, study breaks and naps. It also features a large gas-fired fireplace.
